Confused by Star Driver Episode 1?

You must be at least this FABULOUS to understand the awesomeness that is Star Driver.

I guess it now goes with saying that I’m totally in love with this show. It’s quite a shame that this anime still carries a 4-digit rating on MAL even after this FABULOUS first episode. Reading through the comments from various forums, it’s pretty apparent everyone is loving the visuals, but have no clue at what’s going on. This post is my attempt to get you guys up to knowledge at exactly what Star Driver is about.

This post assumes that you have already watched episode 1. Spoilers below.

The story takes place on an island called Southern Cross Island. Our protagonist, Takuto, is a freshman at the local High School, Southern Cross High School. Initially this show seems to be like a slice-of-life (BONES tried to create this effect by deliberately placing the OP in the middle of the episode), but it’s much more than that.

Basically, sealed under the island are 22 giant robots, called Saibuddy (gg fansubs translated this as Cybody). These mechas are powerful machines that are centuries beyond technology of mankind today, and will obviously wreck havoc to our society if anyone obtained their powers. For this reason, they have been sealed underground in the form of huge, unmovable stone statues. They have four seals, each seal governed by a Shrine Maiden on the island.

Initially, all the Saibuddy are in Phase 1, as all the seals have been placed on them. However, during episode 1, an organization called Glittering Crux Brigade successfully captures one of the shrine maidens and forces her to remove her seal. This allows all the sealed Saibuddy to move to Phase 2, where they can function as long as they have a pilot to apprivoiser (a fancy word for forming a bond with) them remotely in an electric coffin, and inside another dimension called Zero Time.

However, there exists a legendary pilot who can pilot the 22nd Saibuddy Tauban without the need of an electric coffin. In other words, this pilot’s Saibuddy is unrestricted by the seals placed onto them. His name is Ginga Bishounen, which gg fansubs translate to Galactic Pretty Boy. As corny as it sounds, it is a correct literal translation. Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if another fansub group took this up and translated it differently.

The objective of Glittering Crux Brigade is to remove all four seals on the Saibuddy so they can all move to Phase 5, and they can operate outside Zero Time. This will obviously result in World domination or something of the like. They have tried moving to Phase 3 by capturing the second Shrine Maiden, Wako and forcing her to remove her seal, but Takuto in put a stop to that.

The 22 Saibuddy are named after the Phoenician alphabet. The respective symbols appear on the pilot’s body when he/she apprivoises.

The first Saibuddy that Glittering Crux Brigade successfully awakened was the Alphest, named after the first letter. He quickly got pwned by the fabulous Tauban which was moving in Phase 3.

Here is what we currently know about the Phases:

  • Phase 1: Giant, unmovable stone statues.
  • Phase 2: Can operate inside Zero Time. Remotely controlled inside an electric coffin. (One seal removed)
  • Phase 3: Can operate inside Zero Time. Controlled directly with movements. (Two seals removed)
  • Phase 4: Not yet revealed. (Three seals removed)
  • Phase 5: Can operate in reality, aka, our dimension. (Four seals removed)

Hopefully this post helped you understand the concepts of this FABULOUS anime and enjoy it to its fullest for the next 24 episodes.

  1. Thanks so much for the Phoenician alphabet! I was wondering where the names came from. I really liked this episode, and I didn’t find it confusing. Instead, it was a wild ride from beginning to end.

  2. “You bastard… you’re the GINGA BISHOUNEN?!”

I had a little trouble breathing after this line.

Even after being told several times about how FABULOUS this series is, it still took me completely by surprise. I’m not even sure I can put it into words… Star Driver is as FABULOUS as TTGL is GAR. O_O
